Return to Roots is an expression of my growing obsession with the sustainable agriculture and slow food movements. To the extent that I have anything new to add to the movement, it will likely be along two fronts:
- I’m not living in Berkeley and probably never will be. There’s nothing wrong with Berkeley, but a huge number of the writers and thinkers for this movement live there. It’s time to diversify both regionally and culturally. My family farm is in southeast Georgia, a state waiting for a return to small-scale agriculture, even if it doesn’t know it. Returning to Roots is not just about rebuilding soil, it’s also about rebuilding agrarian economies, communities, families and values we’ve largely lost and need to regain.
- I have a background in international development, and I’ve spent time living in East Africa. I hope to bring this to bear occasionally on discussions about the direction of our food system.
If you have thoughts on anything I write, please leave a comment. I like discussion!
